Endicott Arm, Admiralty Island, Frederick Sound, Wrangell Narrows, Anan Bear Preserve.
This trip begins with the bustling Alaskan Capital of Juneau, from which we will travel south in Stevens Passage toward Holkam Bay. Once there, we will explore the icy fjords of Endicott Arm, where we have the opportunity to float and kayak among huge icebergs and watch a tidewater glacier calve into the ocean. Described by some as impressive as Glacier Bay, Endicott Arm offers one of the most stunning glacial landscapes in Southeast Alaska – sheer granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and thundering glaciers.
From Holkam bay we will continue south in Stevens Passage where our passage enters into Fredrick Sound. Here, the water teems with food that attracts a large variety of marine mammals – most notably, Humpback Whales. We will spend hours floating in solitude, watching and listening to the sights and sounds of the creatures that ply these waters all summer long. From our floating home, we will explore the convoluted coastline of Southeast Alaska. We will hike deep into the forest to waterfalls, rivers, and beautiful old-growth tree stands.
Traveling west, the Snow Goose will make its journey near the village of Kake with a destination of Baranof Warm Springs on Baranof Island. After a hot soak in the natural warm springs we will journey toward the village of Wrangell, passing the small town of Petersburg Alaska.
The latter portion of our trip will take us south, through Wrangell narrows, and into Sumner Strait where we will explore Zarembo Island, Zimovia Strait, and Etolin Island. Another highlight of this trip will be a visit to beautiful Anan Creek and a hike to the US Forest Service Wildlife Observatory to look for bears feeding on spawning salmon.
During the trip our expert naturalists will help you learn about the local ecology and the native cultures through hands on learning, discussions on board, and the use of the Snow Goose’s natural history library. The trip will end in Wrangell where you have the option to tour the Alaska native Chief Shakes “Grizzly Bear House”, visit a native arts museum, or get acquainted with Alaskan small town life.
