Trip Profile:

Trip Overview

Juneau, Holkam Bay, Endicott Arm, Stevens Passage, Fredrick Sound, Chatham Strait, Peril Strait, Cross Sound, Sitka Sound

This trip begins with the bustling Alaskan Capital of Juneau, from which we will travel south in Stevens Passage toward Holkham Bay. Once there, we will explore the icy fjords of Endicott Arm, where we have the opportunity to float and kayak among huge icebergs and watch a tidewater glacier calve into the ocean. Described by some as impressive as Glacier Bay, Endicott Arm offers one of the most stunning glacial landscapes in Southeast Alaska – sheer granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and thundering glaciers.

From Holkham Bay, we will continue south in Stevens Passage into Frederick Sound. Here, the water teems with food that attracts a large variety of marine mammals – most notably, Humpback Whales. We will spend hours floating in solitude, watching and listening to the sights and sounds of the creatures that ply these waters all summer long. From our floating home, we will explore the convoluted coastline of Southeast Alaska. We will hike deep into the forest to waterfalls, rivers, and beautiful old-growth tree stands.

As we make our way west through Fredrick Sound toward Admiralty Island, we continue to search for wildlife on the shore and in the water. Knowing the best anchorages, Snow Goose will journey to a quiet anchorage for a relaxing dinner prepared by our resident chef.

Traveling east to Baranof Island, we introduce kayaking as another way to explore the coastline. Here, from the comfort of a stable and sleek craft, guests experience gliding silently on the water with their own power. Tall mountains loom above with rich intertidal below is the canvas for each day.

With a stop at a natural hot spring, we head north through Peril Straits and take advantage of the few existing hiking trails in SE Alaska. Sitka spruce, hemlock, skunk cabbage, ferns, fungus, and birds are only a few species we will encounter. With an exceptional guide, learning about the forest ecosystem adds to the bounty of knowledge obtained throughout the trip.

Winding our way south toward Sitka, we travel through small passages and narrow channels with a sense of wonder and place as we explore and touch a small piece of what Alaska has to offer. The trip ends in the quaint town of Sitka, where guests may choose to explore the local sights or continue home with a new sense of stewardship, knowledge, and appreciation for what they experienced.
