Trip Profile:
Trip Overview
Fredrick Sound, Admiralty Island, Baranof Island, Chatham Strait, Peril Straits, Sitka Sound
This trip begins in the quaint Alaskan fishing village of Petersburg – also known as Alaska’s “Little Norway.” Early in the trip, we can hike to the base of Baird Glacier, which has receded from the sea and into a stunning rocky canyon. From there, we will head Northwest in search of Humpback Whales, Sea Lions, porpoises, and other marine mammals in their summer feeding grounds of Fredrick Sound. We will spend hours floating, watching, and listening to the sights and sounds of the animals that call Fredrick Sound home. We hope to see bears as we explore the shores of Admiralty Island – which supports the densest population of Brown Bears anywhere on Earth.
Heading Northwest past Five Fingers Light House, we will visit the small island group called the Brothers. nestled in premiere humpback and sea lion territory, groups can kayak in Fredrick Sound and walk the intertidal zone on a remote island.
As we awake, the Snow Goose will continue its journey west toward the ABC island group (Baranof, Admiralty, and Chichagof Island group. Searching for Humpback and Orca whales, we will take a break and anchor in Warm Springs Bay. Home to hot pools and the Alaska Whale Foundation, guests will have the opportunity to soak in the natural hot pools and have a chance to stretch their legs.
From Warm Springs, we continue our journey toward the confluence of waters of Peril Straits with a stop near Hidden Falls hatchery. Home to the raising of smelt and salmon fry, Humpback whales have learned of this abundant food and frequent the area in hopes of a fruitful meal. As we enter Peril Straits toward the Pacific Ocean, we continue to scout the waters for whales, bears, and other species that flourish in an open ocean environment.
Nestled in the shadow of Mt. Edgecombe, on the outer coast of Baranof Island, our trip ends in the Russian Capital turned the fishing port town of Sitka. Here, we will debark the Snow Goose and continue home, explore Alaska further, and relish our shared experience.
